Visit Niwot: Directions, Parking & Accessibility
Niwot sits off the Diagonal Highway between Boulder and Longmont. Leave the car on or near Second Avenue: the two commercial blocks are within a fifteen-minute walk of each other, and the park and the trail are at their edges.

Start on Second Avenue, walk through the park and choose either Cottonwood Square or the trail for the last leg. The sequence keeps the day compact without turning it into a rigid itinerary.

North-east on the Diagonal Highway, then east into Niwot.

Parking, walking and transit
Niwot is unincorporated, so parking rules, road work and trail closures are set by Boulder County rather than a town. Posted signs override anything written here. The county pages and districts responsible for each service are listed once, under resident resources.
- Parking
- Street parking along Second Avenue and lot parking serving the Old Town block and Cottonwood Square. Free at time of writing; posted restrictions apply.
- On foot
- Old Town is walkable end to end in about ten minutes, with continuous sidewalks and short crossings.
- By bike
- The Longmont-to-Boulder (LoBo) Regional Trail runs through Niwot and connects to quiet county roads. The county’s trail page carries the map.
- Transit
- RTD’s Route BOLT runs between Boulder and Longmont along the Diagonal, with a stop at Highway 119 and Niwot Road. Construction of the CO 119 bus rapid transit line has been changing stops on this corridor, so check the route page before traveling.
- Dogs
- Leash and waste rules on trails and open space are set by Boulder County Parks & Open Space.
- Best time
- Weekday mornings for a quiet walk. Summer Thursday evenings for the concert series beside the caboose.
What we can confirm
Second Avenue has continuous sidewalks with curb ramps at the cross streets, and the Whistle Stop Park lawn is reached from a paved path. Entrances vary across the historic block: several have a single step at the door and some have raised wooden porches.
Step-free access differs building by building, so contact a business directly before relying on it. Public restrooms and designated accessible parking have not yet been confirmed on the ground and are not claimed here.
